Overview
A capacitive soil moisture sensor is used to accurately measure the moisture content within the soil. It operates on the principle of capacitive sensing, which involves measuring changes in the dielectric permittivity of the surrounding medium—in this case, soil. As the water content in the soil changes, the dielectric constant (permittivity) of the soil changes.
The sensor precisely measures this capacitance variation, which is directly proportional to the soil's moisture level. It then converts the capacitance value into an analog or digital signal, which can be read by a microcontroller or analog-to-digital converter.
